Smart motorways are “too complicated for people to use”

The old story… you make something idiot-proof and … they invent a better idiot?

The same day Nottinghamshire Live called on the Government to stop building any more smart motorways until major concerns about their safety are properly addressed, the CEO of Highways England is reported to have told the Commons Transport Select Committee (source – BBC):

  • drivers were confused about when they could use the hard shoulder and when it is closed
  • Smart motorways which use a hard shoulder at busy times are “too complicated for people to use”*
  • motorists did not understand them and there were no plans to build any more.

Our concerns can be found here.

*possibly a slightly better explanation can be found at TransportNetwork.

p.s.
I am not a complete idiot … there are some parts missing.
