Figures obtained from Highways England evidence some rates used to charge drivers, fleets and insurers in Area 8 doubled overnight following the appointment of Kier in April 2017. Before this, Amey charged Highways England and Insurers using the same ‘base rates’ or defined costs’ with an example of the figures now being displayed here. But Amey abandoned Areas 6 & 8 as they could not make money on them.
Highways England gifted the Areas to Kier Highways Ltd whose charges for incident attendance saw the Amey rates of between £19 and £36 for incident attendance increase to £65.75 / hour (W08C185). It appears drivers, fleets and insurers are subsidizing the maintenance of our highways.
Furthermore, Area 6 & 8 are subject to a contractually agreed pricing process – but one about which drivers, fleets and insurers will be unaware as it was kept secret.
